What makes an ethical breeder? An ethical breeder is a responsible, knowledgeable person who prioritizes the health, temperament, and well-being of their animals above profit. They conduct extensive genetic health testing, socialize puppies in a home environment, screen buyers thoroughly, and provide a lifelong, written contract that includes taking back any dog they produce.

Key characteristics of an ethical breeder include:

• Selective Breeding: They often specialize in one breed and maintain a waiting list rather than breeding frequently. They do not breed females too young (usually not until over 2 years old) or too frequently.

• Early Socialization: Puppies are raised indoors, "underfoot," and socialized to various sights and sounds.

• Lifetime Commitment: They provide a written contract, guarantee the health of their puppies, and require that if you cannot keep the dog, it is returned to them.

• Screening Buyers: They ask detailed questions about your lifestyle and experience to ensure a proper match. 

• Prioritizing Health & Temperament: Breeding dogs are tested for genetic disorders and heritable traits, often documented through organizations like the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals).

• Transparent Practices: They allow (and encourage) prospective owners to visit, meet the mother dog (and litter), and see the environment where the puppies are raised

• Breeder in good standing the the parent club (RRCUS)

Red Flags of Unethical Breeders (Backyard Breeders/Puppy Mills):

• Selling on Facebook, Craigslist, or at 6-8 weeks without health checks.

• Refusing to show you where the puppies are raised or allowing you to meet the parents.

• Breeding many different types of dogs ("doodles," "designer dogs").

• No health testing or proof of vaccination records.
